Abiding

We are to allow God to Graft us onto the vine (Jesus) and we are to remain in him. Not a few inches away, not wandering around – An Orange branch might see that the apples are having fun, but to separate itself from the orange tree means death. Our job is to Remain in Him, To Live in Him, To Abide (or to wait, endure without yielding, bear patiently, accept without objection, stable and fixed on him, continuing in him, and conformed to the Vine-dressor’s tending.

Poured Out Like a Drink Offering

A drink offering is something special. Something extra. A quarter of a hin is about one cup. One cup of wine is to be poured out on the alter as as an act of thanksgiving. This is truly an offering above and beyond the normal. When we talk about giving money in church we use two terms: we give our Tithe and our Offering. The Tithe is giving back 10% of what God has blessed us with while the offering is extra. It is an act of generosity. It is giving more than required.

We all too often shape God to look, sound, and act like our fathers. And the way we act toward our children and our friends, co-workers, neighbors…. is shaped by this (false) image of God. Jesus said that if we have “seen” him we have “seen” the Father (Jn. 14:9). If your image of God is that he is angry, distant or irrational…maybe it’s time to take another look?
